I came across this
Early Advert for Goodyear Tractor Tires
and then I realised just how much we take things for granted. Tractor tires obviously made many jobs much easier for the farmer (both then and now) - and enhanced safety on the farm. It’s lovely watching ploughing - and also interesting to see the old tractors at work. What a difference with the new Goodyear tractor tires!

ps - I came across this next very scary video of old John Deere tractors - some scary footage here!

I’ve just watched a brilliant little video which explains what a snowblower is and some tips to use them effectively and safely. The video features a John Deere Snowblower - and wow, used properly, it is an effective piece of kit.
Some key points from the video:-
- In principle, your snowblower is just like a lawnmower. The key difference is the size of the cutter blades.
- Instead of blowing grass away from the machine, the snowblower will blow the snow in any direction that you want. There is a handle which you control which will change the angle the snow is blown out of the chute. Another control adjusts the height of the chute to send the snow higher into the air (useful if you’ve got to lift the snow on top of a high snow bank.)
- There are various speed options on the machine which you can set depending on how deep the snow is. Obviously if the snow is real thick, just like mowing grass, you need to keep the speed down to allow the machine to cope with the volume of snow.
- The depth of the cut can be set by adjusting pads on the side of the blower - this is really useful when you are blowing snow from a smooth surface because you can clear snow right down to the road or pavement surface. Set the depth higher for other areas - oh, don’t forget to remove any obstruction which might get jammed in the augur - for instance, if you know there’s a tree branch lying around, that’s just going to get stuck in the machine.
- Pay close attention to the safety instructions in the owners’ manual - machines with moving parts can cause serious injury if used incorrectly.
- Don’t forget to put on ice cleats on your shoes - the cleared surface can be really slippy and you need to be safe!
Enjoy using your John Deere Snowblower.
